Macron Brings Back Sébastien Lecornu as France's PM After Days of Unrest

President Emmanuel Macron has called upon Sébastien Lecornu to resume duties as head of government a mere four days after he left the post, sparking a period of high drama and instability.

The president stated late on Friday, following meeting key political groups together at the official residence, omitting the representatives of the far right and far left.

The decision to reinstate him shocked many, as he said on television just 48 hours prior that he was not seeking the position and his role had concluded.

There is uncertainty whether he will be able to assemble a cabinet, but he will have to hit the ground running. The new prime minister faces a cut-off on the start of the week to put next year's budget before the National Assembly.

Governing Obstacles and Economic Pressures

The Élysée confirmed the president had assigned him to build a cabinet, and Macron's entourage indicated he had been given “carte blanche” to make decisions.

Lecornu, who is one of the president's key supporters, then published a long statement on X in which he agreed to take on as an obligation the assignment entrusted to me by the president, to do everything to finalize financial plans by the year's conclusion and address the common issues of our fellow citizens.

Partisan conflicts over how to reduce government borrowing and balance the books have caused the fall of several leaders in the past twelve months, so his mission is daunting.

The nation's debt recently was almost 114% of gross domestic product – the third highest in the currency union – and current shortfall is projected to hit over five percent of GDP.

The premier emphasized that “no-one will be able to shirk” the necessity of restoring the nation's budget. Given the limited time before the completion of his mandate, he warned that prospective ministers would have to set aside their presidential ambitions.

Leading Without Support

Compounding the challenge for the prime minister is that he will face a show of support in a legislative body where Macron has is short of votes to back him. Macron's approval hit a record low in the latest survey, according to research that put his support level on just 14%.

The far-right leader of the far-right National Rally, which was excluded of consultations with party leaders on Friday, commented that the prime minister's return, by a president increasingly isolated at the presidential palace, is a misstep.

The National Rally would promptly introduce a challenge against a struggling administration, whose main motivation was avoiding a vote, he continued.

Building Alliances

The prime minister at least is aware of the challenges ahead as he tries to establish a cabinet, because he has already spent two days lately talking to political groups that might support him.

By themselves, the central groups lack a majority, and there are disagreements within the conservative Republicans who have helped prop up Macron's governments since he failed to secure enough seats in elections last year.

So he will seek left-wing parties for potential support.

To gain leftist support, officials suggested the president was considering a delay to portions of his divisive social security adjustments implemented recently which extended working life from 62 to 64.

The offer was inadequate of what left-wing leaders desired, as they were expecting he would select a leader from the left. Olivier Faure of the leftist party said without assurances, they would offer no support in a vote of confidence.

The Communist figure from the Communists commented post-consultation that the left wanted real change, and a premier from the central bloc would not be accepted by the public.

Greens leader the Green figure remarked she was surprised Macron had offered the left almost nothing to the left, adding that outcomes would be negative.
